What it funds

Training slots for predoctoral and/or postdoctoral trainees in a defined research area, with stipends, tuition support and training-related expenses.

Who can apply

Institutions apply through a program director with a strong training record. Appointed trainees must be U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals or permanent residents.

Award size

Scales with the number of trainee positions; stipends follow the NRSA levels.

Duration

Usually up to 5 years per competitive segment, and renewable.

How applications are reviewed

Reviewers look at the program's training record and outcomes, faculty mentors, recruitment and retention, and the training plan.

Deadlines

Standard due dates for institutional training grants are 25 January, 25 May and 25 September.

Our summary, checked against NIH guidance in October 2026. Rules, budgets and dates change: always confirm in the current announcement before you apply.
