What it funds

Mentored dissertation research and a training plan for a graduate student, paying a stipend, part of tuition and fees, and a modest institutional allowance.

Who can apply

Students enrolled in a research doctoral program who are U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals or permanent residents. Several institutes do not accept F31s, and some limit them to particular stages of graduate study.

Award size

Stipends follow the NIH Kirschstein-NRSA stipend levels set each fiscal year, plus a tuition and fees allowance and an institutional allowance.

Duration

Up to 5 years of support.

How applications are reviewed

Reviewers score the applicant, the sponsor and training environment, and the research training plan. The research is judged as a vehicle for training rather than as an R01-style project.

Deadlines

Standard due dates for fellowships are 8 April, 8 August and 8 December.

Our summary, checked against NIH guidance in October 2026. Rules, budgets and dates change: always confirm in the current announcement before you apply.
