What it funds

Self-contained projects that can be finished in two years with modest resources. Many institutes use R03s for specific purposes, such as secondary data analysis or support for early-career investigators, so the participating institutes matter more than for an R01.

Who can apply

Any eligible institution may apply. Several institutes do not accept R03s at all, and some limit them to particular topics or career stages.

Award size

Up to $50,000 in direct costs a year.

Duration

Up to 2 years, not renewable.

How applications are reviewed

Study-section review with a 6-page Research Strategy. Preliminary data are usually not needed.

Deadlines

Standard due dates for new applications are 16 February, 16 June and 16 October; resubmissions are due 16 March, 16 July and 16 November.

Our summary, checked against NIH guidance in October 2026. Rules, budgets and dates change: always confirm in the current announcement before you apply.
