What it funds
Usually three or more research projects led by established investigators plus shared cores (for example an administrative core and a technology core), all aimed at one overall goal.
Who can apply
Eligible institutions, usually led by an established investigator. Many institutes do not accept P01s or require contact with program staff well before you apply.
Award size
Large, multi-project budgets; institutes often set ceilings and ask for agreement in advance.
Duration
Up to 5 years.
How applications are reviewed
Each project and core is reviewed individually and the program is also reviewed as a whole for synergy and integration, often by a special panel.
Deadlines
Standard due dates for program projects are 25 January, 25 May and 25 September; check the institute's own requirements first.
Our summary, checked against NIH guidance in October 2026. Rules, budgets and dates change: always confirm in the current announcement before you apply.
