Apply for funding to support exciting and ambitious research in the remit of the Medical Research Council (MRC). To drive important insights into causes and mechanisms of disease and help accelerate diagnosis, advance treatment and prevent human illness.

You must be employed by an eligible research organisation.

You can involve more than one research group or organisation in the project.

There is no limit to the funding you can apply for, it should be appropriate to the project.

MRC will fund 80% of the full economic cost (FEC) and 100% of exceptions.

Funding is available for up to five years.

Questions are now available to indicate a charity co-funder.

What we're looking for Scope

We are looking to fund exciting and ambitious research to transform our understanding of human health and disease by offering flexible grant support for up to five years. Your research should focus on discovery and early translational research within MRC remit that will drive important insights into causes and mechanisms of disease. We want it to accelerate diagnosis, advance treatment and prevent human illness.

We welcome applications that incorporate global perspectives in discovery and early translational research and that have potential to improve global health. Applications involving partners outside the UK should be equitably led and co-designed.

We welcome team-science approaches and multi and interdisciplinary research grants. You will need to demonstrate that you and your team have the right expertise and experience to deliver the research. Additionally, details of the support for people and teams should be embedded in the design of your proposal, recognising the importance of supporting staff and the environment they work in.
